Since September 11, 2001, the City has maintained a firm commitment to identifying all those who lost their lives on that tragic day. I write to you today to update you and reiterate this administration’s commitment to continuing this essential work.
On May 10th, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will transfer unidentified remains to a new OCME Repository at the World Trade Center site. As before, OCME will continue to maintain exclusive jurisdiction over the remains, and the transfer will have no impact on our continued identification work. This transfer will be conducted in a dignified and respectful manner, while also ensuring the protection and security of the remains during the move. Family members seeking more information about the transfer may contact the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit at 212-788-7418.
Starting with the National September 11th Memorial Museum’s Dedication Period (which begins on Thursday, May 15 and extends through Tuesday, May 20), family members will have the opportunity to visit the Reflection Room at the Repository, a private space accessible only to the families of 9/11 victims. After the Dedication period, families may schedule private time in the Reflection Room by calling 311 (or 212-NewYork for those dialing from outside of New York City). When calling, please indicate that you would like to schedule a time to visit the Reflection Room. You will be transferred to a dedicated operator who will reserve an appointment.
