Retired NYPD Officer John Ferreyra, who was robbed of 90% of his award from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, is trying to come to terms with the fact that someone who had been his friend took so much from him while he was suffering from World Trade Center-related lymphoma.
Disbarred lawyer and convicted thief Gustavo Vila, lied to Mr. Ferreyra for four years before his fraud was discovered.
“The theme of it is betrayal,” Ferreyra told Stephen Rex Brown of the New York Daily News. “I’m in my deathbed, as far I knew, when I applied for this. … I felt this was someone I could trust.”
