241 NYPD officers have died from 9/11 illnesses, 10 times the number killed in World Trade Center attack

NYPD officials have told reporters that more than ten times the number of NYPD police officers have died of World Trade Center-related illnesses in the nearly 18 years since 9/11 as were killed in the terrorist attack itself. Twenty-three NYPD Officers were killed on September 1, 2001. Two hundred and forty-one have died of illnesses linked to their work on the site afterwards, report Aaron Katersky and Dr. Sejal Parekh for ABC News.

Cancer is the most common killer among the 241, but cardiovascular disease levels among recovery workers is much higher than those for those workers who did not work the recovery.
