Firefighters who’ve developed PTSD helping others learn to help themselves

The IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery just outside Washington DC is the only residential healthcare facility in the US that is exclusively for firefighters, writes Lynh Bui in the Washington Post. The 64-bed center offers inpatient and outpatient care, tailored for each individual.

PTSD and other trauma-related conditions occur in firefighters, and suicides among firefighters are on the rise. Recent hurricanes, mass shootings and other extraordinary disasters mean that firefighters are responding to even more traumatic events.

The center sits on 15 acres of woodland. Residents can use the fitness room, hiking trails, and pool.
