FLORIDA – A small piece of the World Trade Center has arrived in Montgomery County, and is set to be unveiled during a ceremony Sunday.
Town Deputy Clerk Emily Staley said an unveiling event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the park, located at 214 Fort Hunter Road. The event is set to include U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, County Executive Matt Ossenfort and Greater Amsterdam School District Superintendent Thomas Perillo, along with many U.S. military veterans in attendance.
On Thursday, the steel sat along Route 30 in the town of Amsterdam outside the Recovery Sports Grill with a sign stating “911 We Remember.” It was set to be delivered to the town Friday.
The steel will be placed at the National Veterans Park in the War on Terrorism section of the park, alongside other exhibits.
The steel beam is part of the second tower that collapsed during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. The steel was obtained from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey after an application process.
Staley said the park also recently finished a few new memorials, including a K-9 memorial, and installed a new bench.
The National Veterans Park will include a section for each war with a plaque detailing the history of the conflict, along with interactive bar codes that could be scanned by smart phones, allowing users to access media for the site.
Staley said visitors to the event should arrive early for parking.
