Widows of NYC first responders who died in line of duty must pay for health insurance after city changes policy

Former mayor de Blasio has changed long-standing policy — now the elderly spouses of those city workers killed in the line of duty must either pay for medical insurance or be forced onto a new Medicare plan.

In the past, free health care was guaranteed for life for widows and widowers of those killed in the line of duty.

The people affected by the new rules have not been told what kind of coverage the Medicare plan includes, leaving them unsure what to do, reports Chris Sommerfeldt for the New York Daily News.
