Five U.S. Navy ships, USS New York, USS Iwo Jima, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Farragut and USS San Jacinto, spent the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 heading to Florida to assist communities ravaged by Hurricane Irma, reported Carol Rosenberg for the Miami Herald.
USS New York bears 7 tons of World Trade Center steel in her prow.
The ships are capable of helping hurricane victims in a variety of ways — as floating platforms, medical support, moving supplies, security efforts, and the like. They also carry helicopters to use in search and transport missions.
