The Municipal Art Society is working with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center Foundation to transition Tribute in Light to the Memorial. The Foundation has been in discussions with MAS since last year’s 10th anniversary.
MAS has produced Tribute in Light for the last 10 years. It was independently conceived by several artists and designers including John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian Laverdiere and Paul Myoda with lighting consultant Paul Marantz, who were all brought together under the auspices of MAS and Creative Time. MAS has raised millions over this period to bring the annual illumination to the public to honor the victims of 9/11.
MAS President Vin Cipolla said, “We are unspeakably proud of our founding history and stewardship of Tribute in Light over the last 10 years, and want to express our deep gratitude and appreciation to everyone involved. Now that the September 11 Memorial is open it is fitting that the Foundation incorporate Tribute in Light into its annual commemoration activities, so these are all of one piece. We are honored to be working with Joe Daniels and the September 11 Memorial & Museum board on ensuring that Tribute shines for many years to come.”
Over its nearly 120-year history, MAS has founded and developed many public art and placemaking efforts which have become a part of the city’s landscape.
