Art imitating life: Summerfield woman Katja Brown saw “Come from Away” compassion firsthand

Katja Brown and her family will attend the touring production of Come from Away next week, but they know its plot all too well. Brown and her two children are three of the “plane people” trapped in Newfoundland by the grounding of commercial planes after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Brown spoke with Dawn DeCwikiel-Kane of News & Record about her gratitude for the kindnesses she received from the roughly 10,000 people of Gander, who found themselves suddenly hosts to nearly 7,000 people from 95 countries.

Brown compared the Gander story to that of Mary and Joseph looking for shelter in Bethlehem.

“But the people in Gander — there were no questions asked. They’re like, ‘Come on. We are here. No matter where you are from, what your belief is, we welcome you here.'”
