Blood supply crisis expected to worsen as another winter storm hits New York City

A combination of COVID-19 fears and closures, bad weather, and work from home has sparked a national crisis for blood supplies, reports Ximena Del Cerro for the Brooklyn Paper.

This weekend’s ice is expected to raise the need for blood and lessen the supply of donors still more.

New York City customarily has a five-to-seven day supply of blood. Now the city has two-to-three days’ worth of blood.

As COVID cases decline, more elective surgeries are being performed. Hospitals are using more blood than is being donated.

Please donate if you are able to do so. Click here to learn how to help.
