One hundred and twelve new Port Authority Police Department officers were sworn in at the National September 11th Memorial today. Two of them are following in their fathers’ footsteps, Thomas Leather and Kara Schmidt, report Georgett Roberts and Gina Daidone for the NY Post.
Both fathers served at the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Retired PAPD Detective Sergeant Joseph Leather attended the ceremony.William Schmidt, who served the PAPD for 24 years, died 8 years ago.
As part of the ceremony, 47 red carnations were laid on the names of the 37 PAPD officers killed in the 9/11 attacks, with 10 additional flowers for the ten officers who have died of site-related illnesses since.
