Sgt. Joshua Stahl, who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan in 2011, now has a new customized “smart” home donated by the FF Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, reports Jessica Holbrook in the Canton Rep.
Santa Claus, an honor guard, and family and friends were on hand to celebrate with the Stahl family.
Stahl is a veteran of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan several times. In 2011, Stahl was clearing a path as the leader of a scout team when he stepped on a mine, losing both legs above the knee. He also lost his index finger and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
56 veterans and their families so far have received smart homes from the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Building for America’s Bravest program. Stephen Siller, 34, a member of the FDNY’s elite Squad 1, was off-duty on the morning of September 11, 2001. When he learned of the terrorist attack, he drove to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was closed. He put on his gear and ran through the tunnel to reach the World Trade Center. He was killed in the South Tower.
