The Bronx corner of Bay Shore and Ampere Avenues now bears the name of NYPD Detective Joseph Lemm. Lemm, who also served in the Air National Guard, was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2015.
The corner is across from the spot where Detective Lemm and his widow, Christine, had their first date, and the last date they shared before the deployment that led to his death, writes Georgett Roberts of the NY Post. The couple has two young children.
Detective Lemm, christened “Superman” by his colleagues, was 45.
Christine Lemm told attendees at the ceremony, “I know that Joe wouldn’t want us to mourn his death but rather celebrate his life. It is, however, much easier said than done. Please cherish every moment together with your love ones because you never know when it may be your last.”
