As the countdown to the commissioning of the USS Arlington approaches its final days, fund-raising efforts to support the ship and its crew have reached the $310,000 mark.
That’s about $180,000 shy of the anticipated half-million dollars that is needed to provide for commissioning activities and create a “tribute room” honoring 9/11 first-responders and those who died at the Pentagon during the 2001 terrorist attack, but organizers say they plan to continue to raise funds even after the ship is commissioned.
Commissioning is slated for April 6 in Hampton Roads, and will mark the entry of the landing platform dock into active U.S. Navy service.
