The fund for the 1,500 people sickened by the New York attacks hasn’t dispensed any compensation money. It was founded under the so-called ‘Zadroga Act’ two years ago. The bill was passed by the US Congress and signed into law by President Obama. It was named after James Zadroga, a 34-year-old policeman who died of a lung disease attributed to his participation in rescue operations in the rubble of the World Trade Center.
The act covered health aid to firefighters, police officers, rescuers and up to 15,000 other first responders who were sickened after taking part in rescue and recovery operations in downtown Manhattan. The Victim’s [sic] Compensation Fund budget was estimated at some 2.7 billion dollars.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer called the delay “outrageous.” He said men and women who had been saving lives following the attacks were fighting for their own lives and suffered from cancer.
Chuck Schumer was the only American politician who responded to the scandal, unlike the US media who chose to leave it in the dark.
The Victim’s [sic] Compensation Fund refused to comment on the situation.
