Staten Island’s long-running Celic Run will end after 43 years as a Labor Day fixture.
The Celic Run honors the Celic brothers, Marty and Tom, both runners who died far too young. Elder brother Marty Celic was a champion hurdler who was killed in the line of duty with the FDNY in 1977. Tom Celic was Staten Island’s top finisher in the New York City Marathon. He was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
The race was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, and troubles with local roads led to the closure of the event, reports George Kochman and the Staten Island Advance Sports Desk.
