September 11 operating engineer and family member Sal Esposito is in desperate need of a kidney

Sal Esposito, 62, an operating engineer, is in need of a kidney from illness attributed to his work at the site of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Sal and his brother, Joe, a firefighter with FDNY Rescue 5 immediately went to the Trade Center to help and in the hope of finding their brother, FDNY Lieutenant Michael Esposito of Squad 1, who was killed in the attacks. The brothers also lost their cousin, FF Frank Esposito, that day.

Sal now spends half a day three days a week on dialysis, a process that will get worse as his kidneys fail more. The wait for a cadaver kidney is 7-10 years, reports Gracelyn Santos for the Staten Island Advance.
