NYPD adds new class of canine crime-fighters to Transit Bureau, named for those who died because of 9/11

Sixteen new K9 NYPD Transit “officers” have graduated and are ready for duty.

“The remarkable, new NYPD Transit K9s and their police officer partners have been highly trained to keep the city’s millions of daily straphangers safe,” announced NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

Two of the dogs are named Canine Gunny, named in honor of FDNY Firefighter Matthew Garvey of Squad 1, who was killed while responding to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and Canine Brophy, who honors NYPD Officer Thomas G. Brophy of the 109 Precinct, who died of World Trade Center-related illness in 2005, reports Maya Kaufman for Flushing-Murray Hill Patch.
