The wound that won’t heal – Why thousands of New Yorkers might be 9/11 victims – and not even know it.

After years of delay, in July 2019 Congress approved the permanent extension of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, which compensates those sickened by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

But many people sickened by the attacks may not realize it – the residents, students, and workers of Lower Manhattan often do not realize that illnesses they are struggling with were caused by the attacks, reports Bob Hennelly for City and State.

Lawyer Michael Barasch told the press, “If they [residents] don’t see a doctor from the health program, they likely will never connect the dots. It’s time to stop treating the survivors in the 9/11 community as second-class citizens.”
