NYPD honors fallen officers during Medal Day Ceremony

The annual NYPD Medal Day Ceremony was held today, honoring 47 officers who died in the line of duty with the Distinguished Service Medal. All of them died of September 11th-related illnesses, reports Anthony M. DeStefano for the New York Daily News.

Lt. Emmanuel Kwo, Sgt. Arvid Flores and Officer Elwin Martinez were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism during the shooting that claimed the life of Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo in 2016.

NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill told the crowd attending the ceremony, “This is one of the most significant days in the year for us because we honor those who gave their lives for the people of this city, and we also recognize those whose remarkable bravery, instincts and skill carried them through situations that would have panicked most other people. That is the job and nobody does it better than the NYPD.”
