NYC medical examiner to use high-tech DNA system to ID mass casualty victims

A new system called “Rapid DNA” can match genetic material and develop profiles in roughly 2 hours, as opposed to weeks or even months with current technology.

The Office of the Medical Examiner in New York City is about to begin using the system, after officials who tested the new system unanimously voted to use it.

The New York City medical examiner is on the verge of using a new speedy DNA technology in mass casualty situations, a system that can identify victims in about two hours, instead of weeks and months under current procedures, officials have said.

Rapid DNA is a portable device that was used after 2017’s Hurricane Maria and has performed with great accuracy in tests, reports Anthony M. DeStefano in Newsday.
