Can New York’s Governor save Santiago Calatrava’s World Trade Center Church?

Construction at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center ended eighteen months ago due to lack of funding; its shrouded skeleton standing near the site of the towers. Recent interest by New York’s governor may change that.

Governor Cuomo has reached out to wealthy potential donors to restart construction.

“There were mistakes made in regards to the building process and some funds that were misdirected, but they’re all back now so we’re moving forward. “We’re going to begin rebuilding in two to three months,” Father Alex Karloutsos, assistant director of public affairs for St. Nicholas, told Katherine McGrath of Architectural Digest.

The church is now scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2021.
