A statue depicting the flag of Saudi Arabia shaped like a piece of hard candy and 19 other “candy flag” sculptures will be removed from the World Trade Center grounds this week, after complaints about its appropriateness.
French sculptor Laurence Jenkell made Candy Nations – statues of flags of the G20 countries – in 2011.
Complaints arose because 15 of the 19 September 11, 2001 hijackers were Saudi nationals.
Terry Strada of 9/11 Families & Survivors United for Justice Against Terrorism told Hayes Brown of BuzzFeed, “I personally think the Saudi ‘flag’ candy display shows very poor judgment and a lack of empathy on the part of the Port Authority.”
