Memorial service marks 17th anniversary of Flight 587 crash in Belle Harbor

A Flight 587 memorial service was held at the crash site in Belle Harbor on the 17th anniversary of the crash that killed 265 people.

The American Airlines flight heading to the Dominican Republic crashed on November 12, 2001, shortly after takeoff, killing the 260 people onboard and five people on the ground.

The crash in Belle Harbor was especially poignant as the neighborhood was still reeling from the September 11th terrorist attacks in which a large number of Belle Harbor’s residents were killed, reports WABC Eyewitness News. Many police officer and firefighter residents were digging on the pile the night before and then responded to the crash.
