‘Bittersweet but beautiful’: Adding 27 new names to the NYPD Hall of Heroes

The families of 27 NYPD officers who died in the line of duty gathered to see their names added to the Hall of Heroes at 1 Police Plaza, reports Magee Hickey of WPIX 11.

Twenty-four of the 27 officers honored died of World Trade Center-related illnesses brought on by their work after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The daughter of Detective Gerard Ahearn, who died of site-related cancer in 2016, told reporters, “this shows how I always saw him as a hero.”
