New federal legislation will be introduced that could prevent anyone on a terrorist watchlist from renting vehicles, reports Philip DeVencentis of northjersey.com. The legislation will be named the Darren Drake Combating 21st-century Weapons of Terror Act in honor of Darren Drake, who was killed in a terrorist attack in New York on October 31, 2017, when an ISIS supporter rented a truck and mowed down cyclists, murdering eight people.
The legislation has been promised by Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey. Darren Drake’s parents support the legislation.
Like the “No Fly List”, the law the Drake Act proposes would require vehicle rental companies to share details about potential renters with the FBI and with the National Counterterrorism Center, who would check the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment. The Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment currently contains more than one and a half million names of suspected or known terrorists.
James and Barbara Drake, Darren Drake’s parents, plan to go to Washington DC to lobby for the Act.
