Two students from Stonington High School have been charged with vandalizing the Josh Piver Memorial Field at the school, reports Joe Wojtas in The Day.
The boys, both 17, caused $3,000 worth of damage to the field by driving an SUV repeatedly over it. The SUV driver was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespass; the passenger with conspiracy to commit first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespass. Because they are under age 18, their names have not been released.
The field will be repaired and ready for next year’s soccer season.
Josh Piver graduated from Stonington in 1996. During his time at the school, Josh kept goal for the school’s soccer team. Piver was murdered by terrorists at Cantor Fitzgerald on September 11, 2001 at the age of 23. The school hosted the first Piver Cup soccer tournament at the school last year.
The memorial plaque to Josh Piver was undamaged in the incident.
