Amidst the chaos following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States closed its air space for the first time. This action caused 38 flights to be diverted to the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland population 9,651. The town opened its arms to the 6,579 stranded people who suddenly doubled Gander’s population reports Jackie Cooperman in the NY Post.
The people of Gander allowed the passengers and crew to sleep and shower in their homes. They found toiletries, diapers and medications. They entertained ill children who were trying to get to Disney World. They cared for stranded dogs, cats and even monkeys. They accommodated a passenger who wanted to taste moose.
A new musical, Come from Away, is previewing on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre to tell the Gander stories. Opening night is March 12, 2017.
