This year’s winners of the Andrew Stern Memorial Essay Contest have been announced, reports Michael Smollins in the Long Island Herald.
Andrew Stern graduated from the East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School. He was killed at the age of 41 during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks while working at Cantor Fitzgerald Securities.
Approximately 500 students submitted anonymous essays to the contests. This year’s essay topic was how students would make the world safer if they were president of the United States. Winners from the elementary, middle school and high school ages were chosen by Andrew Stern’s mother, sister and brother.
Junior Andrew Schwarzman won the high school category for the third straight year, seventh-grader Jason Miller won the middle school category and fifth-grader Angelina Palma won the elementary school contest.
