New York City still has more than 3,500 objects found in the rubble of the World Trade Center, 13% of the objects found after the terrorist attacks. The rest have been claimed. The last items were returned to family members in 2013, reports Susan Edelman in the New York Post.
There are September 11th family members who are upset that they have not received special items belonging to their loved ones that might be in storage now. Some of them are calling for a private Web site listing each piece of property, accompanied by photos.
In 2004, the NYPD asked victims’ families to submit paperwork describing items they were looking for, to try to match items with those unclaimed objects. The program ended in June 2005. The NYPD is reluctant to display photos of recovered items, for fear of error or fraud.
A database of recovered items was used by police after the bombing of the Murrah building in Oklahoma City in 1995. This worked well, with no reported problems.
