Years ago, JFK Airport’s Hangar 17 was filled with artifacts from the World Trade Center — crushed vehicles, twisted steel, damaged merchandise from the concourse shops. Now the enormous hangar is nearly empty, writes David W. Dunlap of the New York Times.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has given 1,890 pieces of World Trade Center steel and 550 other objects to museums and institutions worldwide. The distribution program was to have ended already, but now, with fewer than 50 artifacts still to find homes, the program has been extended. All the steel has been distributed.
