All New York City police officers – above and below ground — will have their radios reprogrammed to communicate with one another over ultrahigh frequencies, reports The New York Times’ Ashley Southall. Cellphone and Wi-Fi service will also be upgraded so that officers can sync their devices.
Years of bureaucracy and delays will end with the new system, which goes into effect on March 2, 2016.
Officer communication between the streets and the subways has been an issue in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, London and Madrid.
