Planning for a 9/11 memorial charity stair-climb at One World Trade Center is back on track after Gov. Andrew Cuomo stepped in to smooth over a conflict between the event organizers and the building’s landlord.
The event, organized by the Staten Island-based Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor first responders killed on September 11, had been abruptly canceled by the building’s landlord, the Durst Organization, prompting a public outcry.
Organizers accused Durst of being greedy, alleging the building landlord was more interested in renting retail space and keeping building tenants happy, than in helping wounded war veterans. Funds raised were to go toward building high-tech homes for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan as triple and quadruple amputees, reported the Staten Island Advance on March 8, 2016.
