On March 1, 2016, Port Authority Police Captain Kathy Mazza will be honored at the Women of Action ceremony for her heroism during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Mazza, 46, saved many people by shooting escape hatches in the lobby windows of the World Trade Center. Mazza was last seen in the North Tower mezzanine with other police officers, helping a woman. Thirty-seven officers from the PAPD were killed in the attacks.
The portion of Erie Street in front of the Port Authority Police Department Police Academy will be named for Captain Mazza, writes Terrence T. McDonald in The Jersey Journal on February 29, 2016.
