Navy SEAL Senior Chief Edward C. Byers, Jr. used himself as a human shield during a gunfight while rescuing a US doctor being held hostage by the Taliban in December 2012. On February 29, 2016, he became the first living Navy SEAL Medal of Honor winner since the Vietnam War. Only 5 SEALs have ever earned the Medal of Honor.
Dan Lamothe tells the story in the Washington Post on February 29, 2016.
Byers now must combine public Medal of Honor winner duties with the secrecy of being a Navy SEAL.
