American Airlines Flight 587 crash in Queens sparks memories of 9/11 in 2001

Maki Becker and Corky Siemaszko in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 recall the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 into residences in Belle Harbor, Queens on November 12, 2001, which killed 265 people. Only two months after the terrorist attack, the crash raised fears of terrorism. Many of those who responded to the crash came from their work at the World Trade Center site. Belle Harbor is also where many of New York City’s police officers, EMTs and firefighters live.

The flight took off from JFK headed for the Dominican Republic. Everyone on board was killed. Mechanical failure caused the crash.
