Twenty-one more names were added Tuesday to a memorial honoring New York City firefighters whose deaths are linked back to the attacks of September 11, 2001.
As WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported, family members placed white roses at the memorial wall in the lobby of the FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.
The firefighters who were being honored were victims not of the collapsing glass and steel of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, but of the toxic air.
“Fourteen years later, the number of our fallen continue to rise,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “No one can say how many lives September 11 will ultimately claim.”
Nigro said 9/11 continues to take its toll, with 110 names now on the wall. Among them was that of Lt. John Grimms, whose son, Matthew, spoke about his father’s experience.
“He got there the next day and didn’t come home for the next month,” he said. “Actually, he came home three times the next month.”
The memorial wall is only about half full. Sadly, it was built large enough to accept more names.
