The city of Mesquite will host a kickoff event to announce the proposed Mesquite Freedom Park at noon Friday.
Freedom Park will be around a 9/11 memorial that utilizes a 15-foot, 575-pound beam recovered from ground zero of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. The Mesquite Fire Department acquired the beam in 2011.
No city funding has been dedicated to the construction of the park. Proponents hope to raise the initial $100,000 through community fundraising and complete the memorial by September 2016. Further funding will be provided by art grants and more community fundraising.
The event will be on the north lawn of the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Ave. The event will feature remarks about the park, patriotic entertainment, and a classic American lunch.
