The 13th anniversary of the September 11 attacks will include a ground-breaking ceremony for the City of Poughkeepsie’s new 9/11 Memorial park.
The proposed site of the memorial is next to City Hall. The Kiwanis Club of Poughkeepsie has secured two beams from the World Trade Center which will be installed in the park.
This park will include an area to sit and reflect on the beams, surrounded by a bricked area with benches. Under the trees, on both sides of the beam installation, will be tables and benches where local workers and visitors can have lunch, congregate, and enjoy the bustle of downtown, according to a press release from the city.
The City of Poughkeepsie, as well as local businesses, including Healey Chevrolet, DCH Toyota, and Mid-Hudson Subaru, have pledged time, talent and resources to complete phase one of this project, according to the press release.
Two other local companies, Tinkelman Associates and Globe Industries, have designed the layout of the park and the beams’ construction.
“This is a wonderful community project to commemorate a very important part of our nation’s history,” Mayor John C. Tkazyik said in the press release. “Many lives were lost that day and we are fortunate enough to be able to honor those heroes. I am delighted that the City of Poughkeepsie could be part of this and that the city’s residents and visitors will be able to take part in this memorial and enjoy the beautiful space to be created.”
