DONGAN HILLS – “Forkgate” is going to serve a good cause.
The fork that Mayor Bill de Blasio infamously used to eat pizza during an appearance at Goodfella’s Pizza in Dongan Hills is going up for auction.
The fork, which has been kept in an NYPD evidence bag ever since the notorious incident, will be given to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
“We are so thankful to the owners of Goodfella’s Pizza for donating this piece of New York history,” said foundation chairman Frank Siller. “Thank goodness that Mayor de Blasio followed the advice given years ago in the movie The Godfather — he left the fork and took the cannoli.”
De Blasio also had cannoli with him the day he ate pizza with a fork.
All proceeds from the auction will go to the foundation and will be used to help first responders and wounded warriors, including building high-tech “smart homes” for those seriously wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
A press conference to announce further details about the auction will be held at Goodfella’s, 1718 Hylan Blvd., on Thursday at 11 a.m. Attending will be Siller and Marc and Scott Costentino, co-owners of Goodfella’s.
To ensure the authenticity of the fork, Marc Consentino, a retired NYPD sergeant, has kept the fork in a police evidence bag, which is labeled “Property Clerk Storage #642.”
Those interested can begin bidding on the fork on the foundation website, www.tunnel2towers.org, after the press conference.
