The deadline to apply for compensation for injury suffered in the aftermath of 9/11 is approaching. If you suffered physical harm as a direct result of the attack or during the rescue and recovery work that followed it, now is the time to file your paperwork.
The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 provided $2.8 billion for people who experienced pain and suffering or lost wages in connection with the airliner assaults at Ground Zero, the Pentagon or the Shanksville, Pa., crash site. The closeout date for filing initial paperwork is Oct. 3.
The fund covers responders and debris removal crews, as well as anyone who lived or worked in or frequented lower Manhattan, parts of Downtown Brooklyn and other areas connected with the cleanup between September 11, 2001, and May 30, 2002.
So far, 24,000 people have registered and nearly 8,000 have taken the next step of proving eligibility, but thousands more may qualify. If you think you fit the description, or you represent someone who has died and may have qualified, register before it is too late.
