Families of 1,008 of those murdered on 9/11 have won a multibillion-dollar judgement against Iran, though those involved are sure that Iran will never pay, reports David K. Li in the NY Post. Yesterday’s judgment may, however, assist in winning the civil suits currently pending against Saudi Arabia.
Iranian payouts in the lawsuit were stipulated to be $12.5 million per spouse of each victim, $8.5 million per parent, $8.5 million per child and $4.25 million per sibling.
The suit was filed in 2004 and went ahead in 2016 after the passage of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA). The judge who signed the pro forma default order yesterday was George Daniels, a Manhattan federal judge.
