It is estimated that 167 police officers killed themselves last year – more than died by heart attack, shooting, or car accidents.
So far, this year looks worse.
Bruce Leshan of WUSA 9 spoke with four officers. One, Master Police Officer Adam Stone, was at the Pentagon during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, who told him, “I walked into the bathroom with a pistol.”
Retired NYPD Detective Thomas Coughlan, now a psychologist, discussed the problem too.
Getting help is possible – and the statistics can change.
“The biggest message I can put out is number one, there is help available,” Stone said. “Number two, you’re going to get through it.”
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 800-273-TALK (8255).
