Below is a letter that was sent to 9/11 families on August 18, 2014 by mail regarding this year’s 9/11 anniversary.

Dear Family Member:
Following the mailing you received from us in July, this letter contains more detailed information about the upcoming September 11th commemoration. I hope you will be able to join us at the National September 11 Memorial (9/11 Memorial) on Thursday, September 11, 2014 as we honor your loved ones.
Our observance will again consist of the reading of the names of the victims of the September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 attacks. As in years past, the ceremony will take place on the Memorial plaza and the reading of the names will begin after a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. The program will observe six moments of silence throughout the ceremony-representing the moments each tower was struck and fell, the moment of the attack on the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93. The commemoration is expected to conclude at approximately 12:00 p.m., and the 9/11 Memorial will remain open until midnight so that visitors may view the Tribute in Light from the plaza.
The 9/11 Memorial Museum will open at 7:30 a.m. and the last entry to the Museum will be at 7:00 p.m. Due to capacity constraints and to help ensure you will not need to wait, we strongly encourage advance reservations. Please visit a special family reservation site, www.911memorial.org/13thAnniversary, to reserve a ticket to visit the Museum on the day of the ceremony. As always, tickets to the Museum are free for family members. If you need additional information about how to make a reservation, please call (212) 266-5201. If you make an advance reservation, please remember to print or download your ticket(s) to an electronic device. Each family member must have a Museum ticket to be admitted to the Museum. Please note that everyone entering the Museum must go through security screening.
The following information is meant to ensure your comfort during the ceremony on the Memorial plaza.
- Families will be allowed to check in beginning at 7:00 a.m. at the main entrance at the corner of Liberty and Greenwich Streets. Families with special needs may also check in here. Additional entrances will be located at the northwest and southwest corners of the Memorial. See the map on the reverse of the enclosed invitation.
- All bags will be subject to search by law enforcement. We strongly discourage bringing large items such as backpacks and duffel bags.
- The ceremony will be held rain or shine.
- If you have not yet visited the Memorial, we invite you to locate your loved one’s name in advance of the ceremony by visiting names.911memorial.org. This website, called the 9/11 Memorial Guide, is also available on electronic directories at the Memorial. Staff will also be available to assist you on site.
- In order to preserve the Memorial, we ask that you please refrain from placing objects in the pools.
- The 9/11 Memorial Preview Site, the Tribute Center, and the FDNY Memorial Wall will also be open to family members on September 11, 2014.
- We recommend you dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. We also recommend bringing a cap or sunglasses and wearing sunscreen.
- Water will be available. Please note there will be no specific event seating, though there are benches available throughout the Memorial. Accommodations will be available for family members with special needs.
We recommend taking public transportation to and from the ceremony as there is extremely limited parking near the site. For a list of options, please visit www.911memorial.org/getting-here.
The enclosed invitation or this letter in its original form will serve as your family’s credential for admittance to the ceremony on the Memorial.
