FDNY firefighters bid farewell to unsung 9/11 hero Thomas Phelan at Brooklyn funeral

The funeral of FDNY Firefighter Thomas Phelan was held yesterday in Brooklyn. Phelan, 45, died of World Trade Center-related cancer last week week report Graham Rayman and Thomas Tracy in the New York Daily News.

On September 11, 2001, Phelan, then a Statue of Liberty Cruises ferry captain, evacuated hundreds of people from Lower Manhattan. He then continued to ferry supplies to the site of the World Trade Center during the recovery efforts. He joined the FDNY in 2003 and was still an active member of the FDNY at the time of his death.
