House passes bill to give $2.7 billion to families of 9/11 victims

With a vote of 400 to 31, the US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allot $2.7 billion to family members of those killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks who were have been unable to receiving funding from the U.S. Victims of State-Sponsored Terrorism Fund.

Annie Karni reports for the New York Times that the legislation’s passage in the Senate is less certain, and the Senate has recessed.

No word from Congress on addressing the $3 billion shortfall in World Trade Center healthcare funding.

Retired NYPD Officer Timothy Motto honored with street co-naming

A street near the NYC Police Academy has been renamed in honor of former NYPD Officer Timothy Motto, 63, who died of World Trade Center-related illness last year, reports Sophie Krichevsky, for the Queens Chronicle.

Officer Motto was retired on September 11, 2001, after serving at the 28th Precinct in Harlem for many years. He still responded to the terrorist attacks.

Timothy Motto worked to preserve the memory of murdered NYPD Officer Phillip Cardillo, including a street naming ceremony.
