Tribute to 9/11 workers takes shape in granite country

Stonecutters in Vermont are working on the granite “monoliths” that will be dedicated on the National 9/11 Memorial in May 2019 in honor of those rescue and recovery workers who have died or are ill from their work after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Six stone piles weighing from 15 tons to 17.5 tons will flank a path that visitors to the site will one day walk. Steel from the World Trade Center will also be used, writes Lisa Rathke of the Associated Press.

Thousands of recovery workers are ill because of their time on the pile. Many of the sick are attempting to persuade Congress to extend the compensation for the ill, which will expire next year. Anyone who becomes ill after that will be ineligible.
