Wake for retired NYPD Detective Barbara A. Burnette
January 7, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Retired NYPD Detective Barbara A. Burnette died of complications from World Trade Center-related lung cancer (and other lung diseases) on December 30, 2021. She was 58. Her husband Lee is also with the NYPD. She leaves three children.
During the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Barbara was an NYPD police officer in the gang unit in the 73 Precinct. She commandeered a boat and took survivors to safety and was caught in the dust cloud during the second collapse. She then worked the bucket brigade and at the temporary morgue. She was promoted to detective and worked with Command Intel-Operations and Analysis Section.
She retired from the NYPD in 2006 due to lung disease, and was diagnosed with the site-related lung cancer that killed her eleven years later.
Her wake will be held on Friday, January 7, 2022, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church in Brooklyn.
Her funeral will take place at 10:00am on Saturday, January 8, 2022, 10:00am, also at St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church in Brooklyn. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
