Street-Renaming Ceremony honoring FDNY Marine Pilot Thomas P. Phelan

October 12, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

On Friday, October 12, 2018 at 2:00pm, a ceremony will be held to rename the section of 40th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues in Brooklyn for FDNY Marine Pilot Thomas P. Phelan, who died of World Trade Center-related cancer on March 16, 2018.

During the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Phelan, then a Statue of Liberty Cruises ferry captain, evacuated hundreds of people from Lower Manhattan. He then continued to ferry supplies to the site of the World Trade Center during the recovery efforts. He joined the FDNY in 2003 and was still an active member of the FDNY at the time of his death.
