NYC Marathon fundraiser for the family of NYPD ESU Det. Louis Fernandez
November 2, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Detective Louis Fernandez of Emergency Service Squad 6 and the Squad’s union delegate died on October 16, 2014 of cancer contracted through his work on the rescue and recovery from 9/11.
Louis was described by his colleagues as “a personality bigger than life itself” and “the kind of guy who would drop everything and run to a friend’s aid.” He loved the NYPD and especially the Emergency Service Unit. He was a devoted husband to a wonderful woman, and a proud father to two beautiful daughters who he loves dearly. He spent months sifting through the rubble at the Staten Island landfill, and unfortunately he has died because of it. Detective Fernandez died of site-related cancer on October 16, 2014.
Back in December of 2013, a few members of his unit decided they would run in the 2014 NYC Marathon in his honor: Detectives Steve Attarian and Matthew Brander of ESS 6; Michael Driscoll of ESS 5; Robert Goldstein of ESS 4; Portia Lack of ESU; P.O. Vlad Green of ESS 6; and Lieutenants Joseph Redmon and Sean Patterson of ESU. And running with them will be Dr. Michael Korchak, MD at Georgetown Medical Center.
Now, they all want to show Louie’s family how much people love and cared for him, and that they’ll train, sacrifice, and endure for him. They are ready to run!
Louie’s family need our help. Please find it in your heart to donate any amount you can. It will go a long way to helping the loved ones of a man who spent so much of his time helping others, and with the recovery efforts from the WTC disaster, have now sacrificed so much for the City of New York and the U.S.A.
You can go to their website and join Louie’s colleagues in their fundraising efforts for Louis’ family.
